|McPHERSON, KANSAS – McPherson, Kansas, celebrated its new status as a CompetitiveReady Community Sept. 8 at a work session attended by over 50 people. |
That level of support is typical in this community of less than 14,000 — and offers one reason why McPherson earned the first CompetiveReady Seal in Kansas.
Allison Larsen, Chabin principal and CompetitiveReady evaluator, was on hand for the session. She said McPherson Industrial Development Company has a track record of over 50 years of accomplishments. “When I think of McPherson, ‘solution-thinkers’ come to mind. The entire community does not accept what can’t happen; instead, they seek solutions to move the community forward.”
The Sept. 8 work session kicked off implementation of the Economic Development Strategic Action Plan Chabin Concepts prepared for McPherson following completion of the CompetitiveReady scorecard.
Champions from throughout the community were assigned to lead each action group. Two new initiatives — entrepreneurship and active business attraction — were added to other ongoing projects. Larsen said she was impressed that even representatives from the State of Kansas volunteered on some of the committees.
To earn the CompetitiveReady Seal, McPherson had to prove its competitiveness in nine required categories encompassing over 175 site selection factors. CompetitiveReady is a collaborative effort of Chabin Concepts, The Austin Company, Applied Economics, and EDsuite to help communities compete on a global scale for business development.
McPherson supports a large, diverse, and enthusiastic manufacturing sector. Larsen said, “Several executives, who were originally relocated to McPherson as branch managers for a manufacturing plant, chose to stay and start their own business instead of being assigned to another company plant.
