Venture Communities Guide
Venture Communities Connects Entrepreneurs to Large Network of Investors
(January 2009) Chabin recently completed implementation guidelines for Venture Communities, an entrepreneur development program for communities and regions.
Developed by Golden Capital Network (GCN), Venture Communities uses a three-pronged approach to support fast-growth companies. The process involves events, leadership development, and online networking with stakeholders outside the local area.
  • Events Events draw out previously unknown start-ups through the opportunity to showcase their company to investors; venture capitalists and angel investors are drawn to the chance to review a large pool of companies in one day. Through its regional connections, GCN can attract a larger pool of investors to these events. Beyond business-investor networking, Chabin’s interviews with participants found connections included finding a CEO, partnering in related businesses, and developing media contacts.
  • The leadership component requires awareness that growth companies respond best to peers from the entrepreneur and investment communities, rather than traditional economic development and small business assistance organizations.
  • Golden Capital Network developed “Venture Communities Online” to fill a gap that most locally driven entrepreneur-venture capital programs fail to meet: exposing companies to investors, like-minded entrepreneurs, and media from beyond the local borders. Each participating community has its own Venture Communities website, linked to the larger network. Companies, investors and resources have profile pages and can post news as milestones are achieved.
Chabin prepared the guidelines under a WIRED grant, through the California Space Authority. Through this grant, CSA oversaw a widespread set of initiatives to boost innovation in the “California Innovation Corridor.”
The Venture Communities guidelines—including a “Lessons Learned” section—can be found at the California Innovation Corridor website.
